Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Are Getting Divorced, Child Custody Could Be an Issue
Angelina Jolie recently filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, bringing an end to the couple’s brief marriage and lengthy relationship.
In her petition for divorce, Jolie cited irreconcilable differences. However, speculation has run rampant that the real reason for the divorce may be an extramarital affair by Pitt on the set of his latest Hollywood movie.
There have also been reports that Jolie was concerned for the welfare of her children, with Pitt recently being investigated on claims of child abuse. Jolie did not do much to dispel the rumors that the divorce stemmed from concerns about the kids, with her attorney releasing a statement declaring that the decision to file for divorce “was made for the health of the family.”
Pitt and Jolie dated for years and adopted several children together before eventually getting engaged in 2012 and finally marrying in 2014.
The couple’s children could lead to child custody issues during the divorce proceedings. Jolie is said to be seeking sole physical custody of the kids, with Jolie wanting Pitt to only be granted visitation rights. Although the battle over child custody could be contentious, a friend of the family recently spoke to the media and said that both Pitt and Jolie don’t want their divorce to have a negative impact on the kids. Shortly after news of the divorce was made public, Pitt issued a statement indicating that he was “very saddened” by the end of his relationship and that his primary focus now would be the wellbeing of his children. He specifically asked the media to give him children “the space they deserve during this challenging time.” Jolie has also asked for privacy during the divorce process.
Jolie was in the news in 2013 after going public with a very private health matter: she made the difficult decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy. Jolie praised Pitt for being by her side as she dealt with the health scare. Jolie later made the decision to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes in order to protect against a future cancer diagnosis. Again, Pitt was there to support Jolie.
