Divorce on the Rise in Cities across the United States
The population of divorced couples has steadily increased in states and cities throughout the U.S. over the past four decades, according to the genealogy research engine MooseRoots.com.
A longtime statistic has held that approximately half of all marriages end up in divorce. This certainly isn’t a shocking statistic, nor is it a reflection on the couples who do ultimately make the difficult decision to end their marriages. The reality is that divorce is often the best option for a couple who is no longer happy and in which the participants are struggling to get along.
MooseRoots researchers recently used marriage and divorce statistics compiled from a number of resources, including the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Historic Geographic Information System, to track divorce population trends in every state, as well as a number of major cities, between 1970 and 2010. The goal of the study was to see if there was anything to be learned from the changes in the composition of the divorced population in particular geographic areas.
What researchers found is that all 50 states, including New Jersey and New York, have seen dramatic increases in the percentage of married couples deciding to call it quits and move on. Across the entire country, the total percentage of divorced individuals went from 3.4 percent in 1970 to a whopping 10.5 percent in 2010.
Adding to this data is a recent survey of more than 1,600 couples about their wedding days, with researchers confirming that cold feet can sometimes be a strong warning sign of marriage troubles ahead and a predictor of future divorce. Nearly half of all study participants, approximately 49 percent, said that they had doubts about their pending marriages even as late as their wedding day. Beyond that, 65 percent of study participants said that they even considered ditching their prospective spouse at the altar.
