Don McLean’s Wife Accuses Him of Cruelty and Adultery, Files for Divorce
It appears that Don McLean, the folk rock singer and songwriter behind many classic songs, may be singing “bye, bye Miss American Pie” to his wife after she recently filed for divorce.
McLean, who is perhaps best known for singing the classic song “American Pie,” has been married to his wife, Patrisha McLean, for approximately 30 years. Now the couple’s long-lasting marriage is likely about to end. McLean’s spouse has formally filed for divorce in Camden, Maine, where the married couple lives.
While the paperwork filed with the family court cites irreconcilable differences as one of the reasons for the divorce, McLean is also accused of committing adultery and subjecting his wife to “cruel and abusive treatment,” according to the divorce attorney who is representing McLean’s wife in the case.
Earlier this year, McLean was placed under arrest and charged with domestic violence assault for an incident involving his spouse. The 70-year-old singer was detained by police after his wife placed a 911 call and alleged that McLean threatened to strangle her before police officers arrived at the couple’s residence.
Although McLean’s wife initially asked law enforcement for an order of protection against her husband, she later said that whole thing was “much ado about nothing.” After spending some time away from McLean, however, his wife decided that she no longer wanted to stay married to him.
McLean’s wife, a 56-year-old photographer, could potentially seek a large portion of the couple’s estate through distribution of property, as well as spousal support. Moreover, McLean still faces criminal charges in connection with the alleged domestic violence assault, which could have an impact on the divorce proceedings.
