Father Gets Shared Custody in Bristol Palin Child Custody Case
The Bristol Palin child custody case recently came to a resolution, with Palin’s ex-fiancé, Levi Johnston, being awarded joint custody.
Palin, the daughter of former Alaska Governor and Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, was embroiled in a heated dispute with Johnston over custody of the former couple’s son, Tripp Johnston.
Tripp was born in 2009. When Johnston and Palin broke up a short time later, Johnston filed suit for co-parenting rights. In the lawsuit, Johnston claimed that he needed a court order because the Palin family was making it hard for him to gain access to his son.
Although the couple reportedly arrived at a child custody agreement in 2010, a family court never actually signed off on the deal. As a result, the agreement was never finalized and, eventually, dismissed due to lack of activity.
In 2013, Johnston filed a new petition with an Alaska family court in order to finally get shared custody of his son Tripp. Now the court has ruled in the case and sided with Johnston.
After the court issued its ruling and granted equal custody rights to Johnston, the father issued a statement in a Facebook post. Johnston said that he was happy to finally be done with “all of this back and forth in the courts.”
Johnston also specifically noted the extreme amount of time and money he had put into his fight for child custody. According to Johnston, the entire child custody dispute took him seven years and cost “around $100,000 in lawyer fees.” Ultimately, Johnston added, “it was all worth it” because he will finally get to be a co-parent to his child.
