Hollywood Star Charlie Sheen Seeks to Reduce Child Support Payment Requirements
Embattled Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen has filed a petition in a Los Angeles family court as he attempts to get a court order to reduce his mandatory child support payments.
Sheen, who recently went public with news that he is HIV positive, currently pays a minimum of $55,000 per month in child support to his twin sons.
Sheen’s divorce from his ex-wife Brooke Mueller in 2011 was extremely contentious and resulted in a great deal of media attention at the time. Now the media figures to provide even more scrutiny of Sheen as he seeks to alter his original divorce settlement with Mueller.
In his petition to the court, Sheen said that his monthly income has been reduced from $600K per month to $167,000 per month. Additionally, Sheen indicated that he currently has more than $12 million in debts, including money owed for taxes, legal fees and home mortgages.
One potential issue for Sheen as he looks to get the family court to reduce his required child support payments to his six-year-old sons is the fact that he just received $26.7 million for his profit participation rights in the hit TV series “Two and a Half Men.” The sale of these rights was reported by Sheen in his official court filing.
The last major television project that Sheen worked on was the hit comedy “Anger Management,” which aired on the FX network from 2012 to 2014.
Importantly, one unique aspect of Sheen’s divorce agreement with Mueller, his second ex-wife, was that his mandatory child support payments to the couple’s two kids could not be lower than his child support payments to the kids he had with his first wife, Denise Richards. In order to get a reduction in child support payments to his children with Mueller, Sheen will need the court to remove the provision from the divorce settlement.
