To say that divorce is stressful might just be the understatement of the year. However, when it’s time to go your separate ways, people understand that there is hopefully a life at the end of the tunnel. Newly single, exes can move on with their lives and start anew.
According to a new study just released by the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, NC., divorced women are more likely to have heart attacks than those who stay married. On the other hand, the risk isn’t as serious for men; the study results revealed that men don’t show an increased risk for heart disease until they’ve been divorced twice.
Further, if a man gets remarried, his risk of heart attack actually goes down! Twice divorced women suffer from an even further increased risk – almost as though they had a co-morbidity factor such as diabetes or hypertension.
The study followed 15,000 men and women, ages 45 to 80, for 18 years (1992-2010). All subjects were married at least one time. By the end of the study, about one-third of the people were divorced – up sharply from the statistics at the start of the study when 19 percent of females were divorced and 14 percent of men had split from their exes.
The results of the study, published in the American Heart Association’s Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, also revealed that 1,211 people had heart attacks in that 18 year period. Women divorced once were 24 percent more likely to suffer hearts attacks than those who never divorced. Women divorced twice were 77 percent more likely to have a heart attack. If a woman gets remarried, her risk of heart attack, according to the study, sits at 35 percent – compared to those who never divorced. The study didn’t determine if the risk of heart attack for women increases or decreases as time passes after divorce.
