Frances Bean Cobain and Isaiah Silva Divorce Is Contentious as Couple Fights for Ownership of Famous Nirvana Guitar
The high-profile celebrity divorce between Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain, and her musician husband, Isaiah Silva, has become increasingly contentious as the former couple fights over marital assets and other property.
Although Frances Bean Cobain will likely be able to keep the majority of her inheritance from her father, there is a dispute about whether she should be entitled to maintain ownership of a Martin D-18E guitar that Kurt Cobain used during a classic performance. Cobain famously appeared with his band, Nirvana, on an episode of MTV’s “Unplugged” in 1993. That musical performance, in which the world famous band played acoustically, went on to be lauded as one of the greatest televised performances in the history of music.
The guitar used by Kurt Cobain also has significant monetary, and presumably sentimental, value because it was the last guitar that the Nirvana frontman used before he committed suicide. One estimate indicates that the Cobain guitar was previously insured for a cool $1 million and that it could be worth several million dollars if sold at auction in the near future.
Cobain, who is 23 years old, married currently-31-year-old Silva in 2014. Silva claims that Cobain gave him the guitar as a wedding present. Now Cobain is arguing that Silva should be legally required to return the guitar since the married couple is getting divorced. For her part, Cobain has reportedly enlisted the help of her mother, Courtney Love, who said that the guitar is “a treasured heirloom of the family” and that it was never intended to be given to Silva as a personal gift.
