Johnny Depp Divorce Details Will Be Kept Private
The contentious divorce between Hollywood actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has gotten a ton of attention in the media as the celebrities have lobbed accusations of domestic violence and cruelty toward each other. However, the public disclosure of the circumstances leading up to the Depp-Heard divorce could soon come to an end after a divorce court judge took the extreme step of ruling that the divorce proceedings remain private and confidential going forward.
The judge issued the privacy ruling in response to a petition from Johnny Depp’s divorce attorneys. In court documents, Depp’s legal team argued that there was no need to whet the public’s appetite for details about the celebrity divorce. The petition specifically cited the “extraordinarily public” nature of the Depp-Heard divorce proceedings, with “daily articles in the domestic and foreign press about this proceeding and the parties’ lives.” Moreover, noted the divorce case privacy petition, virtually “every detail of this action has been chronicled by the media and it has become one of the most heavily publicized celebrity divorces in recent memory.”
There were also allegations from Depp’s legal team that Amber Heard was using the media to try to help her divorce case. On at least one instance, said Depp’s attorneys, Heard or her lawyers participated in a media story that revealed details from private settlement negotiations between the spouses. On that occasion, Heard withdrew her request for temporary alimony from Depp.
Depp did not feel that the high-profile nature of the divorce was fair to him – and the divorce court judge seemingly agreed.
The high net worth divorce could have significant financial implications for both spouses. Given Depp’s significant accumulation of wealth over his many years as a successful Hollywood actor, there have been significant questions about how much money Depp will ultimately have to pay Heard when it comes to alimony – especially since the couple reportedly did not enter into a prenuptial agreement prior to getting married.
